Jane Broderick Magovern
Jane Broderick Magovern is the daughter of Mildred Abate Broderick and Walter Norman Broderick, and granddaughter of Sarah Jane Guinan Abate who was born in Birr, Oflay. In May of 1904 Sarah Jane Guinan traveled to the United States with her sisters Helena, Greta and Annie aboard the ship Lucania. The came to meet their sister, Mary Guinan Bergin, who was already here.
Jane was born and lived in Spring Lake Heights until age 12, then moved wither her family to Spring Lake. She attended St. Catherine's Grammar School, St. Rose High School, and Caldwell College for Women in Caldwell, New Jersey.
She met her husband Brian at St. Rose High School and they married in 1974. They reside in Belmar. Brian has been the Belmar Recreation Director for the past 25 years. In 1974, Jane began teaching at St. Rose Grammar School. In 1977, they had their daughter Meghann, and in 1980, they had their second daughter, Colleen.
Meghann, a St. Rose High School and Bucknell University graduate, is married to Peter Marturano of Spring Lake and they reside in Boston, Mass. Meghann works for Merrill Lynch. Colleen, a St. Rose High School and Elon University graduate, is Director of Dance at the Spring Lake Community Theater. Colleen lives in Belmar.
Jane is a very active member of the Belmar community. In the summer for the past 20 years, she has managed the Belmar Recreation Arts & Crafts program. At St. Rose Grammar School, she has coached the cheerleaders, track team, and cross-country team as well as being advisor for the school yearbook.
In 1994, Jane was named "Teacher of the Year" at St. Rose Grammar School and in 2002, she and her husband Brian were named "Citizens of the Year" for Belmar. Jane also finds time to be a volunteer in the Pastoral Care Office at Jersey Shore University Hospital.
2004 will see Jane as Deputy Grand Marshal of Belmar/So. Belmar's 31st St. Patrick's Day Parade... and Jane is a most deserving lady for this honor... she proves it every day!
